Established in 1787, Destrehan Plantation is the oldest documented plantation south of the lower Mississippi River Valley. The plantation is 30 minutes away from downtown New Orleans and 10 minutes away from the New Orleans International Airport. We are open seven days a week, with the exception of major holidays from 9am to 4pm. The tour of the plantation home takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour. We recommend that you allow an additional 30 minutes to view the demonstration and self-explore the grounds and dependency buildings. Our costumed historical interpreters will intrigue you with stories of those who lived on the plantation free and enslaved. After the tour guests can view a folk-life demonstration and self-explore our dependency buildings such as a slave cabin with enslaved registry, an overseer's cabin showcasing our 1811 Slave Revolt and Rost Home Colony Exhibits, an outdoor kitchen, a wash room, a trapper's cabin and our Legacy Room, displaying original documents and artifacts from the family members.
